The Flight of the Shadow George MacDonald 9781466220584 Books
This fascinating tale by George MacDonald is unusual for a couple of reasons. First, it is a story narrated by the main character rather than the author. Second, it incorporates a couple of mysteries created by a seeming double appearance. As usual with MacDonald, the story grabs many opportunities to express soul-gratifying spiritual truths embedded within. Having read and admired many of MacDonald’s novels, this one was a special treat for the reasons described above. Enjoy!Product details

The Flight of the Shadow George MacDonald 9781466220584 Books Reviews
Great book. Uplifting in a complex way.
Another great by Macdonald! There're always such interesting characters who grow spiritually as they encounter and progress through life's trials.
The print-on-demand version I bought had 90 pages of dense tiny type with very little formatting, making it extremely difficult to read. So disappointed. I love MacDonald, so will buy another with more respect for the author's work.
George MacDonald has been a favorite of mine for years. This book reads like a mystery. Even reading it the second time, I couldn't put it down. And like all of his books you need not be concerned with any inappropriate material.
I can see why another said this was a favorite, and all of that reviewers' points were well taken, but I didn't love this book, and I won't reread it, though I will reread most of MacDonald's other non-fantasy novels. I'm glad I read it, because, as always for me with a MacDonald book, I got spiritual insights from it. Also, the mystery was a good one, and it was solved very nicely. But I didn't like the romance. In this case, "love at first sight" was really love at immediately first sight and nothing else. It seemed too strange to me, and I didn't like the idea. Surely you need something more than a person's face to fall in real love (as opposed to lust, and, of course, MacDonald never means lust by "love"). So I was out of sympathy with the narrator, Belorba, because I was annoyed that she would fall in total love with someone based only on his face--and that she should prove to be right to do so! But the mystery is a grand one, and the villain is one of the very best! I loved the villain! Also, the spooky atmosphere of evil that MacDonald can create so well was marvelously rendered here, along with the triumph of God's goodness over it.
If you like Macdonald you will love this.
I realized while reading "The Flight of the Shadow" that I had read this story about thirty years ago, back when I was borrowing all the George MacDonald books I could find from the local library. I remembered the solution as I read, and as I finished the final chapters, it again struck me how improbable the whole thing was. I'm tempted to expound on why, but as this is a mystery and I don't want to give any spoilers, I won't. You'll just have to read it for yourself. But I will say that the theme of the story is that it's not good to keep secrets because eventually every secret will be found out. Still, even the best people keep them --- I suppose because if every character was forthcoming, there wouldn't be any story.
